Stripe Managed Payments vs Gumroad Fees Compared

Gumroad's 10% + 50¢ plus processing reaches 12.9% + 80¢ per direct sale, while Stripe Managed Payments charges 6.4% + 30¢. Compare fees on a $25 product.

Stripe Managed Payments and Gumroad occupy opposite ends of the merchant-of-record spectrum. Both take on the legal-seller role (collecting and remitting sales tax and VAT, owning compliance liability), but they sell completely different products around it. Managed Payments, in public preview since February 2026, is checkout and billing infrastructure. You bring the website, the audience, and the integration work, and Stripe handles processing plus compliance for roughly 6.4% + 30¢ on domestic cards. Gumroad is a storefront, with hosted product pages, file delivery, memberships, and the Discover marketplace, no code required, and weekly payouts. It is priced accordingly at 10% + 50¢ plus payment processing of 2.9% + 30¢, or 12.9% + 80¢ all-in on a direct sale.

Sales sourced through Gumroad’s Discover marketplace cost a flat 30%, and sales through its mobile app cost 40%. On a $25 digital product, that is $1.90 in fees on Managed Payments against $4.03 on a direct Gumroad sale, rising to $7.50 if the buyer came through Discover. Strip away the branding and both platforms sign the same contract. They are the merchant of record, the legal seller of your product, responsible for global sales tax and VAT. Gumroad has operated that way since January 2025. Managed Payments launched into public preview in February 2026, built from Stripe’s 2024 acquisition of Lemon Squeezy. Everything else diverges. Gumroad hosts your product page, delivers the files, runs the checkout, and operates Discover, its internal marketplace, so you can sell with no website and no code. Managed Payments assumes you have all of that already and sells the processing-plus-compliance layer underneath it.

A $25 product, four ways it can sell

  • A Managed Payments checkout on your site charges 6.4% + 30¢ = $1.90, a 7.6% effective rate.
  • A direct Gumroad link you shared costs $3.00 in Gumroad fee (10% + 50¢) plus $1.03 processing (2.9% + 30¢) = $4.03, or 16.1%.
  • A Gumroad sale the buyer found on Discover runs a flat 30% = $7.50.
  • A purchase in Gumroad’s mobile app takes 40% = $10.00.

The same file at the same price nets you $23.10, $20.97, $17.50, or $15.00 depending on the pipe it travels through.

The comparison that matters is direct sales

Discover and app sales are opt-in channels, so the honest head-to-head is a buyer you brought yourself. There the spread is fixed at 6.5 points plus 50¢ per transaction. A creator selling $3,000 a month of $30 design assets (100 sales) pays Gumroad $467 (12.9% of $3,000 plus 100 × 80¢), a 15.6% effective rate. Managed Payments takes $222 (6.4% plus 100 × 30¢), or 7.4%. That is $245 a month, $2,940 a year, for traffic Gumroad did nothing to generate.

When 30% is a good deal

The arithmetic flips for sales you would never have made. A $30 Discover sale nets $21 against the $0 of a sale that doesn’t happen. The 30% is functionally an affiliate commission paid on incremental revenue, and Gumroad’s weekly payouts and zero setup cost keep the operational bar low. The trap is paying storefront rates on non-storefront sales. Once your own audience drives the volume, every direct transaction carries a 16.1% toll for infrastructure that Managed Payments prices at 7.6%.

Where each one fits

Gumroad fits creators at the start of the curve, with no site, no code, memberships and file delivery handled, and discovery included. Managed Payments fits software businesses and established creators who own their traffic and want MoR compliance on top of Stripe’s checkout, billing, and fraud stack, at a rate less than half of Gumroad’s direct-sale total. Its preview status is the one caveat. Pricing may change at general availability, so re-check the schedule before a long-term commitment.

Verdict

Choose Stripe Managed Payments if you already have a website and an audience. At 6.4% + 30¢ it costs less than half of Gumroad’s 12.9% + 80¢ on every direct sale, and a creator moving $3,000 a month of $30 products keeps an extra $245 a month (about $2,940 a year) by making the switch. Choose Gumroad if you need a storefront running today with zero code, or if Discover genuinely sends you buyers. A 30% fee on a sale that would not otherwise exist is customer acquisition, not payment processing, and Managed Payments has no equivalent channel. The honest framing is that Gumroad’s premium pays for distribution and convenience, and it only makes sense while you are using them. Once your own site drives most sales, the six-and-a-half-point spread on direct transactions is the largest recurring cost you can remove.

What’s the best alternative?

Stripe Managed Payments and Gumroad aren’t the only two options for this kind of selling. Kelviq, a newer merchant of record, charges 3.5% + 40¢ per sale with no monthly fee (2.9% + 40¢ on your first $5,000). On a $100 domestic sale that works out to $3.90, next to $6.70 on Stripe Managed Payments and $13.70 on Gumroad, and the fee includes usage metering and entitlements that SaaS and AI products otherwise build separately. Frequently asked questions

Stripe Managed Payments charges $1.90 (6.4% + 30¢, a 7.6% effective rate). A direct Gumroad sale costs $4.03, the 10% + 50¢ Gumroad fee plus 2.9% + 30¢ processing. A sale through Gumroad’s Discover marketplace costs $7.50 (30%), and one through its mobile app costs $10 (40%).

Yes. Gumroad became a merchant of record in January 2025, so both platforms act as the legal seller and handle sales tax and VAT remittance. The fee difference pays for Gumroad’s storefront and marketplace, not for a different compliance model.

Discover is Gumroad’s built-in marketplace, and the flat 30% applies only to sales it sources. Because those buyers arrive through Gumroad’s own recommendations and search rather than your marketing, the 30% functions as a customer-acquisition cost on incremental revenue.

Stripe Managed Payments. It charges no subscription surcharge on top of 6.4% + 30¢ and exposes Stripe’s billing infrastructure and APIs. Gumroad supports memberships but charges the same 12.9% + 80¢ on every renewal, which compounds badly on recurring revenue.

Gumroad pays out weekly. Stripe Managed Payments lists US bank payouts as free and, being in public preview since February 2026, notes its pricing may change at general availability.
