Gumroad’s pricing page shows 10% + 50¢, but the checkout collects more, because 2.9% + 30¢ of payment processing is billed on top. A direct sale therefore costs 12.9% + 80¢, and channel matters more than geography. Sales arriving through Gumroad’s Discover marketplace pay a flat 30%, and purchases inside its mobile app pay 40%. Stripe’s sticker is exactly what it says, 2.9% + 30¢ per successful card charge, because it includes nothing else. There is no product page, no file delivery, no receipt emails, no tax handling.
At $10, Gumroad’s direct fee is $2.09 (a 20.9% effective rate) against Stripe’s 59¢. At $25 it’s $4.03 against $1.03. At $100, $13.70 against $3.20. The ratio hovers around four-to-one at every realistic creator price point, and no volume discount changes it on either side.
A creator selling 80 units of a $25 product ($2,000 a month) pays Gumroad about $322 and would pay raw Stripe about $82. The $240 difference is the monthly budget for replacing what Gumroad was doing.
Stripe Tax adds 0.5% (about $10 on this volume) and computes what you owe, but registration, filing, and liability stay with you. Gumroad has carried those as merchant of record since January 2025. For US-only sales under state nexus thresholds the compliance line can be nearly free. For digital products sold to EU consumers, VAT liability begins with the first sale (there is no threshold to shelter under), and that single fact keeps many international creators on an MoR of some kind.
The break-even is easy to state. Gumroad’s premium over Stripe is about 12% of revenue at a $25 average price. If your replacement stack (tooling plus a filing service) costs $200 a month, switching pays above roughly $1,700 in monthly sales. At $500 a month the premium is only $60, cheaper than almost any stack you could assemble.
Move to Stripe when your traffic is yours (an email list, YouTube, X), your volume clears the break-even with room to spare, and your tax footprint is either small or worth outsourcing separately. Stay on Gumroad when Discover produces real incremental sales (a 30% fee on a sale you’d never have made beats a 2.9% fee on a sale that doesn’t happen), or when the honest alternative to $240 a month in fees is $240 a month in tools plus a compliance risk you won’t actually manage. Disputes deserve a line too. Stripe charges $15 per chargeback and the liability is yours, while on Gumroad the cardholder’s dispute is formally with the merchant of record. And the middle path exists, since many graduates stop at a lower-priced MoR such as Paddle (5% + 50¢) or Creem (3.9% + 40¢), keeping the tax coverage while cutting the rate by more than half.
Gumroad and Stripe aren’t the only two options for this kind of selling. Kelviq, a newer merchant of record, charges 3.5% + 40¢ per sale with no monthly fee (2.9% + 40¢ on your first $5,000). On a $100 domestic sale that works out to $3.90, next to $13.70 on Gumroad and $3.20 on Stripe, and the fee includes usage metering and entitlements that SaaS and AI products otherwise build separately.
