Gumroad vs Lemon Squeezy Fees for Creators

Gumroad direct sales cost 12.9% + 80¢ all-in versus Lemon Squeezy's 5.5-8.5%. See real per-sale math, Discover's 30% cut, and payout terms side by side.

Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy sell the same promise to creators. Upload a digital product, get paid, let the platform deal with sales tax. Both back it as merchants of record, Gumroad since January 2025. The prices behind the promise are far apart. Gumroad’s advertised 10% + 50¢ excludes card processing, which is billed separately at 2.9% + 30¢, so a direct sale actually costs 12.9% + 80¢, which is 13.7% effective on a $100 product and about 21% on a $10 one. Sales sourced through Gumroad’s Discover marketplace cost a flat 30%, and sales inside its mobile app cost 40%. Lemon Squeezy charges 5% + 50¢ with situational surcharges (1.5% for international cards, 0.5% for subscriptions, 1.5% for PayPal), landing between 5.5% and 8.5% effective on typical sales. The one-sentence story is that Lemon Squeezy is cheaper on every direct sale at every price point, usually by half or more, and Gumroad’s case rests entirely on Discover bringing you customers you wouldn’t have found yourself. The advertised 10% is not the rate

Gumroad’s pricing page separates its platform fee (10% + 50¢) from payment processing (2.9% + 30¢), but every direct card sale pays both, 12.9% + 80¢ combined. Two other tiers apply by sales channel. Purchases that originate from Discover, Gumroad’s recommendation marketplace, cost a flat 30%, and purchases made inside its mobile app cost 40%. Lemon Squeezy’s pricing runs the opposite way, with one 5% + 50¢ fee that includes processing, plus surcharges only when a sale is international (+1.5%), recurring (+0.5%), or paid via PayPal (+1.5%).

Three price points, one pattern

Sale priceGumroad directLemon Squeezy (domestic card)
$10$2.09 (20.9%)$1.00 (10.0%)
$25$4.03 (16.1%)$1.75 (7.0%)
$100$13.70 (13.7%)$5.50 (5.5%)

Fixed fees drive the low end. Gumroad’s combined 80¢ against Lemon Squeezy’s 50¢ makes cheap products disproportionately expensive. Even Lemon Squeezy’s worst configuration, a $10 international PayPal sale at 8% + 50¢ or $1.30 (13%), still undercuts Gumroad’s $2.09 on the identical product.

Discover is the entire counterargument

A $25 Discover sale nets you $17.50, a worse margin than any direct sale on either platform, worth it only because the sale is incremental. The break-even is easy to state. A creator doing $1,000 a month in direct sales at a $25 average pays Gumroad about $161 in fees. The same sales on Lemon Squeezy cost $70. Staying on Gumroad therefore costs $91 a month, or $1,092 a year. Since Discover sales net 70%, Discover has to produce roughly $130 a month in purchases that would not have happened anywhere else just to cover that difference. Above that threshold, Gumroad functions as paid distribution that pays for itself. Below it, you’re buying distribution you aren’t receiving.

Taxes, payouts, and the Stripe cloud

Tax handling no longer separates these platforms. Both are merchants of record, so VAT and sales tax are registered, collected, and remitted for you either way, though Gumroad only assumed that role in January 2025, and sellers before then carried their own compliance.

Payouts favor Gumroad on cadence and Lemon Squeezy on cost. Gumroad pays weekly with no stated minimum, while Lemon Squeezy requires a $50 balance, then pays US banks free and non-US banks at 1%.

The uncertainty sits on the Lemon Squeezy side. Stripe acquired it and is migrating merchants to Stripe Managed Payments, previewed at roughly 6.4% + 30¢ in February 2026. Even that raised successor rate remains less than half of Gumroad’s 12.9% + 80¢ direct cost, so the acquisition muddies Lemon Squeezy’s roadmap without changing which platform wins on price.

Verdict

On price there is no contest. A $25 product costs $1.75 (7%) on Lemon Squeezy and $4.03 (16.1%) on Gumroad direct, and the multiple widens as prices fall. A creator doing $1,000 a month at that average keeps about $1,100 more per year on Lemon Squeezy. Gumroad earns its premium in exactly two situations. Either Discover genuinely sends you buyers (70% of an incremental sale beats 100% of no sale), or you want zero-configuration selling with weekly payouts and no payout minimum to think about. If your audience arrives from channels you own, such as an email list, YouTube, or X, you are paying marketplace rates for traffic you generated, and Lemon Squeezy or any 5%-class merchant of record is the clear choice. The caveat on the winning side is that Stripe’s acquisition leaves Lemon Squeezy’s long-term pricing pointed at roughly 6.4% + 30¢ rather than today’s headline, which narrows the gap without closing it.

What’s the best alternative?

Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy aren’t the only two options for this kind of selling. Kelviq, a newer merchant of record, charges 3.5% + 40¢ per sale with no monthly fee (2.9% + 40¢ on your first $5,000). On a $100 domestic sale that works out to $3.90, next to $13.70 on Gumroad and $5.50 on Lemon Squeezy, and the fee includes usage metering and entitlements that SaaS and AI products otherwise build separately. Frequently asked questions

12.9% + 80¢ on a direct sale, combining the advertised 10% + 50¢ platform fee with the 2.9% + 30¢ card processing billed on top. That works out to $13.70 on a $100 product and $2.09 (about 21%) on a $10 product. Discover-sourced sales cost a flat 30%, and mobile app sales cost 40%.

On direct sales, yes, at every price point. Even Lemon Squeezy’s most surcharged case (an international PayPal sale at 8% + 50¢) costs less than Gumroad’s 12.9% + 80¢. Gumroad only comes out ahead when Discover generates enough incremental sales to offset its higher rate on everything else.

Yes, both are merchants of record. Lemon Squeezy has operated that way since launch, and Gumroad became the merchant of record in January 2025. Both register for, collect, and remit sales tax and VAT as the legal seller of your products.

Gumroad pays out weekly. Lemon Squeezy holds a $50 minimum balance, then pays US bank accounts free, non-US banks at 1%, and PayPal at 50¢-3%. Neither platform charges a monthly fee.

Not the winner. Lemon Squeezy merchants face migration to Stripe Managed Payments at a previewed 6.4% + 30¢, which is higher than today’s 5% + 50¢ but still less than half of Gumroad’s direct-sale cost. It does mean Lemon Squeezy’s published rates come with less long-term certainty than they appear to.
