Creem takes $1.38 on a $25 sale where Gumroad takes $4.03. Both are merchants of record, so see when Discover traffic justifies Gumroad's triple fees.
Creem and Gumroad chase the same indie sellers of ebooks, templates, courses, and small software, and both are merchants of record, so global tax paperwork is included either way. The prices differ by a factor of three. Gumroad’s advertised 10% + 50¢ excludes card processing (2.9% + 30¢, billed on top), so every direct sale really costs 12.9% + 80¢, which comes to $4.03 on a $25 product. Creem charges 3.9% + 40¢ all-in, $1.38 on the same product, with no international surcharge and no monthly fee.
What Gumroad’s triple price buys is a storefront made up of hosted product pages, a Discover marketplace that takes 30% of the sales it originates, and weekly no-fee payouts. Creem assumes you already have somewhere to sell and only wants to run the checkout. So the useful question isn’t which platform is cheaper (Creem is, on every direct sale at every price point) but whether Gumroad’s distribution earns back a premium that compounds to thousands of dollars a year. The calculator below shows both cuts of your exact price, and the analysis after it puts a dollar figure on the storefront.

A creator moving $1,500 a month at a $15 average (100 sales) pays Creem $98.50 a month and Gumroad $273.50 for identical transactions. Over a year that’s $1,182 against $3,282. Of $18,000 in revenue, Creem returns $16,818 (93.4%) and Gumroad $14,718 (81.8%). Both platforms are merchants of record handling the same VAT and sales-tax obligations, so the $2,100 annual difference isn’t buying compliance. It’s buying Gumroad’s storefront, marketplace, and payout cadence, whether or not you use them.
Gumroad’s direct rate is 12.9% + 80¢ once the separately billed 2.9% + 30¢ processing joins the advertised 10% + 50¢. Creem’s is 3.9% + 40¢ with nothing billed on top. The multiple barely moves across price points. A $10 sale costs $2.09 versus $0.79, a $25 sale $4.03 versus $1.38, and a $100 sale $13.70 versus $4.30, a spread of 2.6 to 3.2 times that widens slightly as tickets grow. Neither platform surcharges international cards, so geography changes nothing. A $49 subscription billed from anywhere costs $7.12 on Gumroad and $2.31 on Creem, just over three times as much. Renewals repeat the full fee on both platforms, so memberships inherit the same multiple every month. Creem’s only upward adjustments are opt-in, at 2% for affiliate tracking and 5% for cart recovery.
The honest way to evaluate Gumroad’s premium is as an acquisition budget. Our example creator pays $175 a month extra to be there. Discover sales net 70% after its flat 30% commission, so Discover must originate $250 a month in purchases that would not have happened anywhere else before the premium breaks even. Above that, Gumroad is paid distribution that pays for itself. Below it, compare the counterfactual, which is the same $2,100 a year spent on sponsorships or ads pointed at a Creem checkout you keep 96% of. Mobile-app purchases, at Gumroad’s 40% rate, deepen the premium rather than offset it.
Payouts come first. Gumroad pays weekly and free, against Creem’s twice-monthly schedule that’s only free into EU/SEPA accounts, and a US seller pays $7 or 1% per payout, roughly $170 a year at full cadence. Setup is the second win, since Gumroad requires no website, no code, and no design work to make a first sale, while Creem is a checkout for a product page you must already have. Optionality rounds it out, because listing on Gumroad costs nothing until something sells, so testing whether Discover moves your particular product is cheap. What Gumroad can’t do is get cheaper. Its 12.9% + 80¢ applies at any volume, forever, while Creem’s flat 3.9% + 40¢ means an indie seller’s fee rate is settled on day one and never worsens as the numbers grow.
Creem and Gumroad aren’t the only two options for this kind of selling. Kelviq, a newer merchant of record, charges 3.5% + 40¢ per sale with no monthly fee (2.9% + 40¢ on your first $5,000). On a $100 domestic sale that works out to $3.90, next to $4.30 on Creem and $13.70 on Gumroad, and the fee includes usage metering and entitlements that SaaS and AI products otherwise build separately.
